George Knowles

H. L. George Knowles is a partner with Injury At Sea. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1969. After spending two years in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, George attended law school. He has been a practicing maritime lawyer since graduating from the University of Santa Clara Law School (Cum Laude) in 1973. Mr. Knowles comes from a long line of seafarers and fishermen. He has been a fisherman himself, owning the F/V GRIZZLY, a 125-foot Bering Sea crab boat.

The first four years of Mr. Knowles' legal career were spent working for a local marine insurance defense firm before leaving to represent injured seamen. This early experience has given him great insight into the inner workings and thinking of the maritime insurance industry which is invaluable when negotiating settlements on behalf of injured seamen.

Mr. Knowles is a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, Washington Trial Lawyers Association and Maritime Lawyers Section of the State Trial Lawyers. He is admitted to practice before all state courts in the State of Washington, United States District Court (federal), the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. In addition to the above, Mr. Knowles frequently acts as mediator of the seamen's personal injury cases at the request of other members of the Maritime Bar.

*Captain Kirk Greiner
Marine Safety Specialist

Captain Greiner is the Webmaster of www.maritimeconsultant.com, and can be reached at landline (425) 640-3048, fax (425) 640-0814. Captain Greiner's website is both authoritative and informative in that not only does it contain Captain Greiner's personal bio, it also lists numerous references, publications and resources on important marine safety issues, and has links to important marine safety sites.

Captain Greiner serves as a marine safety expert for claimants, as well as defense firms, and has been qualified as an expert in State and Federal Courts throughout the United States, as well as in quasi-judicial administrative proceedings. We have enjoyed the benefits of Captain Greiner's expertise for over eight years, and have found him to be extremely well-qualified, always prepared and thoroughly knowledgeable of litigation matters, including the practical aspects of case presentation. He is both an attorney and marine safety specialist.

Captain Greiner has an extensive marine education, starting first with a B.S. from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, followed by extensive marine follow up of practical education and assignments, including numerous courses dealing with marine safety management, accident investigation, ergonomics, OSHA regulations, vessel inspections and fishing vessel safety. From 1978 to 1982, he served as the Coast Guard Captain of the Port and Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection, Portland, Oregon; from 1975 to 1978, he served as Executive Secretary of the Marine Safety Council, Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C.; and, from 1970 to 1975, he served on the staff of Coast Guard Marine Safety Office, Seattle, Washington. He has a combined 20 years in the Coast Guard Commercial Vessel Safety Program, including approval of new vessels, construction inspection, annual safety inspections, dry docking inspection, and casualty investigation. Captain Greiner retired from the Coast Guard in 1982.

What we most appreciate about Captain Greiner's services is his "case hardened," practical approach to serving as an expert in matters under litigation; in our offices, these are mostly Federal Court proceedings. Whether it's a deposition, preparation of a report, scorching cross-examination at trial, or simply dealing with the practical issue of how to keep billing expenses down, we have found Captain Greiner to be a superb expert to work with. In the recent past, we have used Captain Greiner on safety issues involving lifting and safe lifting practices; slip and fall on factory trawlers; ladder safety and fall on passenger ferry; slip and fall aboard a skiff serving with a purse seiner; repetitive motion / carpal tunnel injury from overuse syndrome and, most recently, complex and technical issues relating to the sinking of the F/V ARCTIC ROSE.

John has also served us on a variety of injury cases, ranging from repetitive motion / carpal tunnel injury, severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and back injury claims. John is also capable of providing sound figures for loss of earnings, loss of earnings capacity, costs of retraining, costs of employment re-injury. His ability to include these figures in his analyses has, on occasion, saved us the additional expense of retaining formal economic analysis.

* We are often asked - what experts do you recommend? For that reason we have listed, above, some of our recommended experts. Injury At Sea recommends experts based on the experts' objectivity, fairness, experience, training and credentials. Injury At Sea contracts with all experts only on a case by case basis and has no agreement for compensation which is in any way contingent on case outcome or opiniions expressed. The basis for compensation paid to all experts is no different than what the expert charges any other client. From time to time Injury At sea may obtain an internal, non-binding opinion from an expert prior to retaining the expert, primarily for purposes of determing the expert's interest in a matter. Some experts may be listed by Injury At Sea as a possible expert for a matter. Such a listing does not commit the expert to the case and does not mean the expert has or will render an opinion regarding the case. All experts recommended by Injury At Sea are retained, frequently, for both plaintiff and defense work.
